"We argue that the link between school board representation and substantive outcomes is primarily indirect: school boards influence administrators, administrators influence teachers, and teachers influence educational outcomes." (Ross, Rouse, Bratton 74).

There is an ongoing cycle of minorities being labeled as unsuccessful. One of the reasons why Latino's and blacks are placed under this label is because of the lack of education that they receive. "Consequently, the average 17-year-old Black or Hispanic students would perform at an academic level similar to a 13-year-old White student."(Haycock, Jerald & Huang). This statistic not only shows that students who live in low-come areas are not getting the education that they need but that students who live in low- income neighborhoods are automatically being set up for failure. The fact that minority students are being received low paying jobs, sets the boundary and separation between whites and ethnically diverse students.
Having ethnically diverse teachers in schools is important because students need role models to help them achieve success. Noelle Yeung states, "the achievement gap between ethnic minorities and their White peers is especially important because of the increasingly diverse student population in the United States." This means that the teacher's ethnically diverse settings should be proportional to that of the population. Having this balance can help the country become less racist and more understanding and accepting to everybody's cultural views and lifestyles. |
The fact that the school board is made up of mostly all white candidates, they are the ones that influence and make up what kind of education is going to be taught. Since there are not enough representation in minority groups, that does not allow them to be able to give equal opportunities to all ethnicity groups. The domino effect is what cause the school board of education to influence teachers ways of teaching and therefore influence the students academic achievement. "These findings underscore the importance of school board elections and school district hiring practices on Latino student performance." (Ross, Rouse, and Bratton 1). This proves how we need more minority teachers as part of the school board to influence teaching strategies. Overall the lack of ethnically diverse teachers affects students performance which affects future generations to come.
