”Teachers of color are diminishing. White teachers have no understanding of urban realities” (Anton)
We will be addressing the major conflict of the lack of ethnically diverse teachers in educational institutions. Inspired by the novel “Always Running” by Luis Rodriguez, we observed the influence that a teacher and student of like cultures may have on the student and how this is reflected in America’s educational systems. According to a state-by-state analysis of racially diverse teachers in 2011, on a national level 40 percent of the public school population was made up of students of color. In comparison only 17 percent of the teachers were non-white (Boser 2). Based on this, we researched the effects a racially diverse teacher might have on students and their success.
Our research question: How does the lack of ethnically diverse teachers affect the achievement gap of students? |
Note:
We define ethnically diverse teachers as everyone non-Caucasion including, Latinos, African Americans, Asians, and Native Americans. This applies to students too.
